Introduction
This is a solution manual all of the questions in the excellent statistical textbook:
b b b b b b b b b b b b b

An Introduction to Mathematical Statistics and Its Applications by
b b b b b b b b

Richard Larsen and Morris Marx b b b b b

This solution manual was prepared form the fifth edition of the textbook. I have
b b b b b b b b b b b b b

looked at other editions of the book and have had a hard time finding any significant
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

differences between the editions.
b b b b

I’ve tried to provide much more detail than is normally found in a typical solutions
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

manual. Thus rather than just give the solution I try to explain in great detail how I
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

arrived a the solution. This will further reinforce the main ideas from class and
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

bbetter teach the material. The manual stands at over 400 pages.
b b b b b b b b b b

One of the benefits of this manual is that I heavily use the Rstatistical language
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

to perform any of the needed numerical computations (rather than do them ”by-
b b b b b b b b b b b b b

hand”). Thus if you use this manual you will be learning some Rprogramming at the
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

same time as you learn statistics. The Rprogramming language is one of the most
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

desired skills for anyone who hopes to use data/statistics in their future

,career. All the Rcode can be found at the following location:

As a final comment, I’ve worked hard to make these notes as good as I can, but I have
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

no illusions that they are perfect. If you feel that that there is a better way to
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

accomplish or explain an exercise or derivation presented in these notes; or that one
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

or more of the explanations is unclear, incomplete, or misleading, please tell me. If
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

you find an error of any kind – technical, grammatical, typographical, whatever –
b b b b b b b b b b b b b

please tell me that, too. I’ll gladly add to the acknowledgments in later printings
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

the name of the first person to bring each problem to my attention.

Chapter 2 (Probability) b b

In working some of these questions I have chosen to use Ror pythonto
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

explicitly enumerate the spaces requested rather than to derive them by hand. While
b b b b b b b b b b b b b

many of these questions could no doubt be done “by hand” it is very easy to change
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

a problem statement in such a way that will make that impossible.
b b b b b b b b b b b b

Using a computer is a more robust (with respect to problem specification) way to
b b b b b b b b b b b b b

work problems like these and is a helpful skill to have.

Question 2.2.1 b

The full sample space in this case would be
b b b b b b b b

Event A would be the set b b b b b

Event B would be the set b b b b b

Question 2.2.2 b

We can use Rto enumerate the possible outcomes when we toss three die. We have
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

, D = 1:6
b b

outcomes = expand.grid(D, D, D) b b b b

colnames(outcomes) = c(’R’, ’B’, ’G’) mask
b b b b b b

= apply(outcomes, 1, sum) == 5
b b b b b b

print(outcomes[mask, ])
b b

Running the above we get b b b b

> print(outcomes[mask, ]) b

R B G
3 3 1 1
8 2 2 1
13 1 3 1
38 2 1 2
43 1 2 2
73 1 1 3

for the members of the event A .
b b b b b b b

Question 2.2.3 b

We can generate this sample space with the following pythoncode
b b b b b b b b b b

from itertools import combinations
b b b

for it in combinations(range(1, 7), 3): if
b b b b b b

sorted(it)[1]==3: print it
b b b

Running the above pythoncode gives b b b b b

(1, 3, 4)
(1, 3, 5)
(1, 3, 6)
(2, 3, 4)
(2, 3, 5)
(2, 3, 6)

for the elements of the sample space.

Question 2.2.4 b

We can pick the suit of the first card in four ways. We can pick the number on the
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

first card to be one of the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. For all of these choices
b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b

(excluding 4) the number on the other card required that the two cards sum to 8
