Adherence to HIV treatment is one of the major global concerns. South Africa is not spared from this global conundrum, with recent international and local reports indicating that children and adolescents living with HIV in the country are often presented in healthcare facilities with chronic conditions resulting from failure to adhere to treatment. This is despite the country having been applauded a few years ago, as one of those that rolled out an effective HIV programme amongst its peers. Among the issues that contribute to this challenge is that these children and adolescents do not know their HIV statuses because their parents and caregivers did not disclose to them due to fear of their potential reaction as well as the general fear of stigma associated with HIV.

BSW3702 ASSIGNMENT: JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026

INTRODUCTION

Group work is a core method in social work practice that enables individuals to address
personal, social and emotional challenges through shared experiences and mutual
support. In South Africa, social workers increasingly rely on group interventions to
respond to complex social issues such as HIV and AIDS, student wellbeing and social
exclusion. This assignment consists of two sections. Question 1 focuses on the
application of group work principles in supporting children and adolescents affected by
HIV non-disclosure. Question 2 presents a comprehensive group work proposal
informed by the video Teaching wellbeing: helping students tackle social issues. The
assignment integrates theory, ethical considerations and practical group work skills.

QUESTION 1: CASE STUDY

1.1 How you would recruit these children and adolescents for this group (3
marks)

Recruitment of children and adolescents would be done through the local clinic where
they receive antiretroviral treatment. The social worker would collaborate with
healthcare professionals such as nurses, doctors and counsellors who already have
established relationships with the families. These professionals would help identify
children and adolescents who are on HIV treatment but are unaware of their HIV status
due to non-disclosure by parents or caregivers.

Parents and caregivers would be approached individually and informed about the
purpose, benefits and objectives of the group. The social worker would explain how the
group will support both caregivers and children in preparing for disclosure and
improving treatment adherence. Participation would be voluntary, and informed consent
