Atenolol is a beta blocker used to treat high blood pressure among affected individuals.
The drug is a medication taken orally and daily to control blood pressure and prevent the
complications associated with the disease. High blood pressure also called hypertension is a
debilitating condition that damages core body organs such as blood vessels, brain, kidneys, and
heart if left untreated. Research shows that the damage triggers stroke, kidney failure, vision loss,
heart attack, and heart failure. The drug is usually prescribed alongside non-pharmacological
interventions such as physical activity, balanced diets, limited sodium intake, and avoiding
smoking. Lifestyle changes and the taking of atenolol daily contributes to blood pressure
management among affected individuals. The drug controls blood pressure by relaxing the blood
vessels and decelerating the heart rate. This actions improves the flow of blood in the blood
vessels and subsequently reduces the blood pressure. Improved blood flow reduces the work of
the heart when pumping blood, ensuring that blood reaches the rest of the body easily.
Specifically, atenolol binds to the receptors in the heart and prevents the actions that contribute
to increased heart rate and muscle contraction. This leads to the barring of sympathetic
stimulation which contributes to reduced blood pressure and blood flow. The drug is taken orally
even if the affected individual feels well. This is because high blood pressure is a chronic disease
that does not have a cure and can only be managed (Rehman et al., 2024).

High blood pressure also called hypertension is chronic disease that significantly lowers
the quality of life for affected individuals. According to Stanford Medicine (2025), there are two
types of hypertension namely primary and secondary high blood pressure. Primary hypertension
is a condition that stems by itself with the passage of time and does not have a specific causation.
