TEFL.org Methodology-Unit 2 Written Assignment

Task 1

The top five characteristics I have that will make me a good teacher are as
follows:

1) I am energetic.
2) I am friendly.
3) I explain difficult words and concepts.
4) I show genuine interest in each student.
5) I customize my lessons for each individual student.

I think that being energetic and friendly are top personality traits when
teaching all ages, especially young learners or those who are just beginning
to learn English. I would like to know whether students are comfortable in my
class, and for them to know it is okay to make mistakes.

I also think customizing lessons for each student is very important, as they
all learn differently.

Task 2

Lead-in
I would review present simple verbs by showing pictures of people that
could do various things such as “walk,” “sing,” “dance,” “run,” “eat,” and
“sleep.” The location would be at a local park. I would then elicit the verbs in
present tense as I held up pictures one at a time. At this point, I would wait in
silence for students to name the verb. If students could not name the verb, I
would model the ones they did not know.

Presentation
The students do not know present continuous tense. My method would
utilize visual, nonverbal tools plus a very specific set of steps and structures
in a very precise order.

I would begin by modeling a series of “first person present continuous”
answer structures such as “I am standing.” “I am talking.”, “I am jumping.”
and “I am sitting.” I would then act each one out so that the students would
understand that the tense means the action is happening now. I would also
mime each word as I said them.
