- posterior to the ligamentum teres (obliterated umbilical vein)
- longer & narrower than the RPV



right portal vein (RPV) the right branch of the main portal vein
- it courses through the right lobe of the liver and branches into anterior and posterior branches
that further subdivide into multiple branches throughout the right lobe
- some branches send also send blood to the caudate lobe, making the caudate the only liver
segment supplied by both RPV & LPV
