Information Technology in Nursing Practice
A. Identify a healthcare setting and an electronic health record system (EHRS) that could
be used in this setting.
I currently work for a level one trauma center, and the EHRS we utilize is EPIC. I will be
using this system as my EHRS example.
, Information Technology in Nursing Practice 2
1. Describe the purpose of the EHRS used in the identified healthcare setting.
The EPIC EHRS is a comprehensive patient health record system that maintains a
patient’s personal health information, including medications, allergies, radiology images,
labs, and nearly any other relevant health information.
2. Using a specific example, explain how this EHRS is used to make decisions
promoting high-quality patient care in this healthcare setting.
This system enables physicians and nurses to view lab and radiology results in real-time,
allowing patients to receive treatment promptly and, in some cases, making a significant
difference between a favorable outcome and a poor one. Such as a patient whose
potassium level is critically high, this can lead to death if not treated promptly.
3. Identify a barrier/challenge (e.g., privacy, costs, usability, accessibility, terminology,
accuracy, etc.) to using this EHRS in this healthcare setting.
One challenge to this system is usability. For staff who have never used this system, it
can be challenging to learn how to use it and take full advantage of its features. The
system features multiple screens that function differently, depending on the department
you are working in. This can be very confusing, especially for float pool staff.
4. Describe the role of the nurse in maintaining data integrity while overcoming this
barrier/challenge.
It is each nurse’s responsibility to ensure they are knowledgeable in the operation of the
EPIC system. This includes instances where system updates or changes are made to the
system's functionality. The nurse’s role in maintaining integrity is multifaceted; they
