Competency 5: Engage in Policy Practice
Introduction
This evidence, Competency 5: Engage in Policy Practice, informs the social worker's
practices on engagement with policies pertinent to the clients they serve. This competency
entails identifying social policies at all the governmental levels: local, state, federal, and even
international or global levels. The social workers must consider how these policies affect or
shape the access to social services and resources and how they affect the overall well-being of
the social work clients. This competency also educates the social workers on understanding
human rights and justice to humanity and how varying policies can support or perpetrate
this element (CSWE, 2022). This competency also emphasizes identifying and acknowledging
the intricate elements contributing to or affecting social policies, such as historical, economic,
environmental, and cultural factors. Others are racial, social, organizational, and global
factors. Social workers understand these elements, critique them, and compare them with the
contemporary or emerging concepts that change the policy structures, determining whether
they positively or negatively influence human rights (CSWE, 2022). The learner will
demonstrate an understanding of these policies through the following artifacts: artifact 1: Human
Trafficking Among Children in Foster Care – Policy Brief (SOCW 5315 Social Policy &
Analysis), artifact 2: Policy Assignment- NRH (SOCW 5315 Social Policy & Analysis), and
artifact 3: Analysis of an Ethical Dilemma (SOCW 5371 Advance Practice: Theory & Ethics).
