1. Identify the major similarities and differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells are found in bacteria and archaea where Eukaryotic cells are found in plants, animals, fungi and protists. Prokaryotic cells are a more simple structure whereas Eukaryotic cells are more complex. With prokaryotic cells, there is no nucleus or membrane bound organelles, however eukaryotic cells do. Prokaryotic cells are also smaller than eukaryotic cells. They are both similar in the sense that they contain a plasma membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes and have DNA. They also both have the ability to reproduce. 2. Where is the DNA housed in a prokaryotic cell? Where is it housed in a eukaryotic cell? In a prokaryotic cell, DNA is found in the nucleoid. In a eukaryotic cell the DNA is found within the nucleus. 3. Name three structures which provide support and protection in a eukaryotic cell. Three structures that provide support include the cell membrane, cytoskeleton, and the cell

lab Questions

1. Identify the major similarities and differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Prokaryotic cells are found in bacteria and archaea where Eukaryotic cells are found in plants,
animals, fungi and protists. Prokaryotic cells are a more simple structure whereas Eukaryotic
cells are more complex. With prokaryotic cells, there is no nucleus or membrane bound
organelles, however eukaryotic cells do. Prokaryotic cells are also smaller than eukaryotic cells.
They are both similar in the sense that they contain a plasma membrane, cytoplasm,
ribosomes and have DNA. They also both have the ability to reproduce.

2. Where is the DNA housed in a prokaryotic cell? Where is it housed in a eukaryotic cell?
In a prokaryotic cell, DNA is found in the nucleoid. In a eukaryotic cell the DNA is found within
the nucleus.

3. Name three structures which provide support and protection in a eukaryotic cell.
Three structures that provide support include the cell membrane, cytoskeleton, and the cell
wall.

EXPERIMENT 1: CELL STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Introduction Questions
1. What is the difference between the rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
The difference between the two are the presence or absence of ribosomes. The rough
endoplacmic reticulum have ribosomes which give the rough appearance, where the smooth ER
lacks ribosomes. Another difference is the location of where they are found.

2. Would an animal cell be able to survive without a mitochondria? Why or why not?
This would not be possible. This is due to mitochondria being the main source of energy of the
cell and for ATP - adenosine triphosphate. Without it, cells would struggle to have enough
energy and would most typically die.

3. What is the function of a lysosome?
The function of a lysosome is to get rid of waste. This would be like the digestive system of a cell
as they break down and dispose of waste.
