Case Study
Susan, an undergraduate enrolled in an online university, returned to her studies with a
firm resolve to pursue a fulfilling career rather than merely a job. Setting high standards for
herself and her academic performance, she dedicated significant time to studying and
coursework, bolstering her determination through continuous learning. Initially diligent in
, following instructions, reviewing assigned readings, and heeding feedback, she gradually found
herself missing quality time with her son and friends.
Recently, Susan was invited out, and because she misses having a social life she eagerly
accepted. Mark had invited Susan and throughout the night continued to show her different ways
he was attracted to her. Susan values Mark's affection towards her, especially since she has been
away from social interactions for some time. In return, she reciprocates with mild affection and
accepts Mark's friend request on Facebook. Upon browsing her Facebook page, Susan comes
across Mark’s frequent posts expressing love and affection towards her. Understanding that
Mark has misunderstood her friendly demeanor at the party, Susan acknowledges the necessity
of addressing their relationship. Despite the potential discomfort it may cause Mark, she
recognizes the importance of honesty. Considering Mark’s public declarations on Facebook,
Susan feels compelled to publicly clarify their relationship, believing it to be the appropriate
course of action. Susan carefully composes a thoughtful response post, aiming to empathetically
address Mark's perspective regarding their single date. She endeavors to gently convey her
viewpoint while acknowledging the enjoyable time they shared at the party. However, she
respectfully establishes boundaries for future interactions and opts to unfriend him on Facebook.
