Chapter 6: Data Communication
Data Communication - ANS-The electronic transfer of data from one location to another
Bandwidth - ANS-The amount of data which can be transferred from one location to another in a
certain period of time.
Attenuation - ANS-The loss of power in a signal when travelling from the sender to the receiver.
Broadband - ANS-Allows for multiple pieces of data to be sent simultaneously, leading to an
increased transmission rate.
Narrowband - ANS-A voice-grade transmission channel capable of sending max 56000 bps.
Protocols - ANS-Rules which govern data communication, including error detection, message
length, and transmission speed.
Modem - ANS-A device which connects a computer to the internet. Stands for
modulator-demodulator
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) - ANS-A high speed carrier speed which uses phone lines to
connect users to the internet.
Communication Media - ANS-Connects sender and receiver media, can be conducted or
radiated.
Conducted Media - ANS-Provides a physical path along which signals are transmitted, e.g.
Fiber Optics.
Radiated Media - ANS-Uses an antenna to transmit signals through air or water.
Centralized Processing - ANS-All processing in a system is done by a single computer.
Decentralized Processing - ANS-Each user, department, or division in a system has it's own
computer for performing processing tasks.
Distributed Processing - ANS-Maintains centralized control and decentralizes operations.
Processing power is distributed among sever locations.
Open Systems Interconnection model (OSI) - ANS-A seven layer architecture for defining how
data is transmitted between computers on a network.
