Community Based Nursing Practice vs. Community Oriented
Nursing Practice
Community "Based" nursing focuses on illness care in the
community typically with one family, and can result from
increased hospital costs (ie: home health nurse) whereas
Community "Oriented" nursing investigates causes of
community diseases/surveillance and has goals to prevent,
preserve, and promote (ie: public health nurse).
Aggregate definition
Aka "Population," collection of individuals who share one or
more personal or environmental characteristics (ie: Ball State
students). "Subpopulations" in an aggregate are smaller groups
of the population that share similar characteristics (ie: Senior
Ball State students).
Population Focused Nursing Practice Includes...
Emphasis on aggregate care, not just individuals. Looks at
aggregate as a whole, investigate overall population health and
contributing factors. Provide health education to the entire
community to improve overall health status.
Lillian Wald Significance
Created Henry Street Settlement which contained the first public
health nurses that cared for those in their homes, despite their
, wealth. Her and her nurses looked at the low-income population
as a whole to determine how they can improve overall health.
