Answers
To act as PIC under IFR or in weather conditions less than the minimums for VFR- Within 6 cal. months
preceding the month of flight: - Answer-6 instument approaches
Holding procedures and tasks
Intercept and track courses using electronic nav systems
Not current looking back 6 months? - Answer-you can still log the required "6 HITS" with a safety pilot
(under simulated conditions), examiner or instructor.
Safety pilot requirements - Answer--At least a private pilot with appropriate category
and class.
- Have adequate vision forward and to each side of the aircraft.
- Aircraft must have a dual control system.
Not current looking back 12 months? - Answer-instrument Proficiency Check (IPC) by a CFII,
examiner, or other approved person is required. Guidelines are in the ACS.
▷ Some IPC tasks, but not all, can be conducted in a FTD or ATD. (Refer to the ACS)
,Privileges of being instrument rated: - Answer-fly in controlled airspace in weather less than VFR,
fly on an IFR flight plan, fly in Class A Airspace,
fly Special VFR at night
commercial pilots can fly passengers for hire in excess of 50 nm or at night.
PREFLIGHT NWKRAFT - Answer-- N- NOTAMs.
■ W - Weather reports and forecasts.
■ K - Known traffic delays as advised by ATC.
■ R -Runway length of intended use.
■ A - Alternatives available if flight cannot be completed as planned.
■ F - Fuel requirements
■ T - Takeoff and landing performance data.
Requirement: no person may operate an aircraft in controlled
airspace under IFR unless that person has: - Answer-- Filed an IFR flight plan; and
▷ Received an appropriate ATC clearance.
■ It is legal to fly IFR in uncontrolled airspace (class G) without a flight plan or clearance. However, once
airborne, you must remain in uncontrolled airspace until you file a flight plan and get an ATC clearance
to enter the controlled airspace.
How to file flight plan - Answer-FSS (1800wxbrief)
ForeFlight
ATC
How early should you file an IFR flight plan - Answer-30 mins prior to departure
, How to cancel flight plan - Answer-Towered - cancelled upon landing
Non towered - contact ATC/FCC by phone
Can cancel anytime if out of IMC and Class A airspace
Fuel requirements for IFR - Answer-Fuel to the destination then to the alternate plus 45 at normal
cruise
When to file an alternate airport - Answer-- Instrument approach available
- 1 hour both and 1 hour after ETA
- ceiling is at least 2000 AGL
- viz = 3 SM
Min weather at alternate airports - Answer-Precision = 600 ft , 2 SM viz
Non-precision= 800ft, 2 SM viz
No instrument approach = ceiling and viz must allow descent from MEA, approach and landing under
VFR
For GPS's with a non-WAAS gps (Alternates) - Answer-Cannot fly GPS approaches at both
IFR takeoff minimums - Answer-- No takeoff minimums per part 91
- preferably higher than the minimums at the departure airport
Min IFR altitudes - Answer-Mountainous: 2000 ft above highest obstacle with 4 NM horizontally
Non-mountainous: 1000 ft above highest obstacle within 4 NM horizontally.
DA - Answer-- Decision Altitude
