Drug Cards- Pharmacology NRSG-106 Drug Name: Amoxicillin Drug Classification: Anti-infective. Aminopenicillins (broad spectrum penecillins). Mechanism of Action: Inhibition of cell wall synthesis, which renders the bacteria unable to create the cell walls needed to sustain them. This stops the bacteria from multiplying. Side Effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, seizures, insomnia, edema, dysphagia. ANSWER Pertinent Assessments: Assess for infection and obtain specimen culture if possible to determine sensitivity. obtain history and determine penicillin allergy before beginning therapy. Client Teaching: Do not use this if you are allergic to any penicillin derived antibiotic. Amoxicillin can make birth control pills less effective. Take the medication for the entire prescribed length of time. Notify your doctor if any symptoms of GI distress, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, or bloody stools arises. Drug Interactions: Increase effect with aspirin, allopurinol, probenecid, methotrexate. Decrease effect with tetracycline and erythromycin. Increase bleeding with oral anticoagulants. Decrease effect with acidic fruits/juices. Contraindications: Allergic to penicillin, asthma, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, pseudomembranous/ulcerative colitis, mononucleosis. Specific Nursing Considerations: Monitor bowel functions and observe for anaphylaxis. Drug Name: Azithromycin Drug Classification: Antibacterial Macrolide. Mechanism of Action: Inhibits the steps of protein synthesis- bacteriostatic or bactericidal. Side Effects: Blurred vision, drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tinnitus, abdominal cramps, pruritus, rash. ANSWER Pertinent Assessments: Assess vitals and urine output and report abnormal findings. Check lab tests to determine liver function. Order liver enzyme tests periodically for patients continually taking large doses of
