Freud: Levels of awareness o Conscious: Consists of what someone is aware of at a particular point in time o Preconscious: Contains information that is just below the surface of awareness, something that can be retrieved by recollection o Unconscious: Contains thoughts, memories, and desires that are buried deep within ourselves Level of Consciousness o Lethargic: Aroused by voice o Stuporous: Physical stimulus needed o Coma: No consciousness. They must accept the consequences of their own decisions and respect others decisions o Fidelity: Loyalty and faithfulness to the client and to one's duty o Veracity: Being honest when dealing with a client Patient rights o Pts retain their rights as citizens o The only right that is withheld from them is, the right to freedom o While hospitalized, the pts rights will be balanced against safety o Confidentiality consent ends at discharge or time of death Can no longer discuss anything about patient Patient rights: Duty to warn o The responsibility of a care provider to inform third parties or authorities if a client poses a threat to themselves or others Doctrine of least restrictive interventions o Mandates that the least drastic means are to be taken to achieve a specific purpose ACT – Assertive Community Treatment Team o This includes nontraditional case management and treatment by an interprofessional team for clients who have severe mental illness and not compliant with traditional treatment o Helps to reduce occurrences of hospitalizations and provides crisis intervention, assistance with independent living, and information regarding resources for necessary support services Tort o A civil wrong that one person commits against another person, which causes injury to the second person and/or damage to the second person's property Negligence Failure to take proper care or to fail resulting in damage or injury to another person Malpractice Professional negligence Assault V
