Atelectasis (collapse, airless alveoli) is a common postoperative risk due to anesthesia, restricted breathing from the pain, and retained secretions. Crackles will typically resolve by deep breathing promoted by the use of an incentive spirometer. 12. Following major abdominal surgery, a client is at risk for blood clots due to immobility, manipulation of vessels and hypercoagulability.
