Cranial Nerves
Twelve pairs
Sensory (afferent), motor (efferent), or mixed (both) functions for the head/neck region
eyes, ears, nose, mouth, etc (special sense organs)
somatic and visceral fibers
Each nerve is identified by a number (I through XII) and a name Summasry of Function of Cranial Nerves
Forebrain
olfactory nerves
optic nerves
brain stem (10 nerves come from brain stem)
vagus nerve #10: only nerve that leaves the head region and innervates the abdominal viscera and innervates the adrenal gland. Leaves through the jugular foramen
Spinal Nerves
31 pairs, all mixed (both motor and sensory)
Supply all of body except the head Named according to their point of issue
7 C vertebra, 8 C nerves
