BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AT A JAPANESE KAISEKI 2 M3 Assignment - Building Relationships at a Japanese Kaiseki Case Study 1. Develop a brief snapshot that you could give to a colleague traveling to these countries outlining the key cultural differences and similarities between Australia and Japan. In what ways might these differences reduce message clarity in the exchange between the visitors and their hosts? Work Attire Japanese offices are usually conservative and require formal work attire at all times. Those who wear casual clothing are perceived as informal or rude. Japanese businesspeople wear black, grey, or navy suits complete with ties. Japanese businesswomen wear a white shirt with a black or navy blazer and a skirt with matching colors. The attire for Australian business people is usually causal. Men often wear button shirts and long trousers, and women have a range of choices compared to Japanese women. Besides, most Australia organizations have “casual Friday,” where the workers are encouraged to wear casual attire to work, such as T-shirts and jeans. Working Hours Japanese people are known for working for long hours, usually sixty hours a week, despite the labor laws recommending fewer working hours. It is an impolite gesture for the employee to leave the office and leave the boss and other employees with work they have to do overtime and, in some cases, unpaid. Employees believe that working over long hours enhances their promotion chances since the quantity of work counts more than quality. It is also a common practice for the workers in Japan to go for drinks after work to enhance their relationship with the managers.
