Example of Negative Symptoms Social Withdrawal and an inability to experience pleasure (anhedonia), many persons experiencing these symptoms of (Psychosis) are diagnosed with schizophrenia or a bipolar disorder (manic depression). The term Premorbid Refers to the period before the individual became ill. Labeled Self-Stigma Occurs when a person with a mental illness internalizes the negative image the stigma conveys to others. Phase of Schizophrenia (Residual phase) Symptoms become milder; both positive & negative symptoms decrease, but negative symptoms are more likely to persist. What are the 3 types of episodes are associated with mood disorders? 1. Depressive episodes 2. Manic episodes 3. Mixed episode Depressive episodes? Are Characterized by extreme sadness or emptiness lasting most of the day, every day, for a period of 2 weeks or longer. Manic episodes? Are marked by an elevated mood, in which the person feels excessively "up" or "high", and occasionally excessively irritable, for a period of a week or more. Mixed episode? A person meets the criteria for both types of episodes, cycling through depressive and manic phases of the illness. Bipolar disorder? Formerly called manic depression. Both major depression & bipolar disorder may or may not have some of the psychotic features described earlier, such as hallucinations & delusions. Schizoaffective disorder? Individuals who have the symptoms of schizophrenia & also meet the criteria for one of the major mood disorders. ( which has 2 subtypes: Bipolar & Depressed).
