o The term “marketing” means different things to different people. What is the first

a. Marketing is the process of exploring, developing, and delivering value to satisfy the
needs of a target market.
b. This definition is consistent with the American Marketing Association’s definition of
marketing, which defines marketing as “the activity, set of institutions, and processes for
creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for
customers, clients, partners, and society at large.”
i. Organizations must define their products not as what the companies make or
produce but as what they do to satisfy customers.
c. Marketing-mix variables are often viewed as controllable because they can be managed.
However, economic conditions, competitive influences, and government regulations may
shape the decision-making environment for controllable variables.
