Cell division is the process by which one parent cell divides to form new daughter cells. It is important for growth, development, repair, and reproduction. The cell cycle mainly has two parts: Interphase – The cell grows and prepares for division. It includes G₁, S, and G₂ phases. DNA is duplicated during the S phase. M phase – The cell undergoes division: Prophase: Chromosomes condense and the spindle forms. Metaphase: Chromosomes align at the equator. Anaphase: Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles. Telophase: Two new nuclei form. Cytokinesis: The cytoplasm divides, producing two daughter cells. In mitosis: one parent cell produces two genetically similar daughter cells with the same chromosome number as the parent cell.
