BUILT AROUND THE IBCLC DETAILED CONTENT OUTLINE: The cheat sheets cover the major IBCLC examination disciplines: Development and Nutrition; Physiology and Endocrinology; Pathology; Pharmacology and Toxicology; Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology; Techniques; and Clinical Skills. Exam items are also classified by chronological period, running from general principles and preconception through prenatal, labour and birth, prematurity, and each interval from the first days of life to beyond twelve months. BEST FOR: Registered nurses and midwives supporting breastfeeding families; physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in maternal and infant care; registered dietitians working with pregnant and postpartum clients; speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists managing infant feeding; breastfeeding peer counsellors and certified lactation counselors; and anyone pursuing initial IBCLC certification or recertifying by examination. WHAT YOU'LL RECEIVE: ONE-PAGE SUMMARY. The complete IBCLC blueprint on a single page, with the major disciplines and the highest-yield concepts in each. TERMINOLOGY TABLES. Side-by-side comparisons of the terminology the exam expects you to distinguish, from colostrum through mature milk to prolactin versus oxytocin. COMMON CONFUSIONS CHEAT SHEET. The concept pairs that cost candidates points, including engorgement versus plugged duct and perceived insufficient milk versus true low supply. MISTAKE-FINDER MINI-QUIZZES. Practice spotting the assessment errors candidates actually make, such as judging milk transfer by feeding duration rather than by findings. HIGH-YIELD QUICK REFERENCE. Every discipline condensed to what you need to recall, from lactation physiology to feeding devices, milk handling, and storage. ACTIVE RECALL STRIPS. Retrieval prompts covering the hormones of lactation, signs of effective transfer, expected voiding and stooling patterns, and contraindications. PROVE-YOU-KNOW CHECKS. Applied tasks that confirm you can take a feeding history, assess position and latch, and develop and document a care plan. EXAM-DAY CHECKLIST. A clear checklist to help you feel organized, focused, and ready to perform. BONUSES INCLUDED: Your purchase also includes access to a bonus resource page with three additional study tools. PRINTABLE STUDY TEMPLATES. Mind maps, comparison charts, and Cornell notes for organizing difficult concepts and comparing commonly confused information. FLEXIBLE WEEK-BY-WEEK STUDY PLAN. A weekly schedule that breaks your preparation into manageable steps instead of trying to review everything at once. ONLINE PRACTICE LAB. Interactive study games and activities: flashcards, matching activities, crosswords, Sort It, and Scramble Sprint. Instant digital download. You know that scramble in the last stretch before an exam, when you don't have time to
reread everything and you're just trying to lock in the stuff that actually shows up. We've
been there, and it's exactly why we made these.

Everything here is the high-yield material, pulled out and laid out clean so you can review
fast and trust that what's in front of you is what matters. Read them early to see the big
picture, keep them handy between study sessions, or lean on them hard in those final days
when you just need the essentials in one place.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THESE
01 Start with the One-Page Summary. Read it once to see the whole exam at a glance, then
come back before every study session to keep the big picture in view.

02 Work the Terminology Tables and Quick Reference next. These are your foundation: the
terms, equations, and facts you'll use again and again.

03 Test yourself, don't just read. Use the Mistake Finder quizzes and Active Recall Strips to
pull the material from memory. Cover, quiz, repeat. That's where the real gains happen.

04 The night before, run the Exam-Day Checklist. Walk in prepared and calm.

A QUICK TIP Don't try to memorize every page in one sitting. Review a little each day, lean on
active recall, and let the Prove-You-Know Checks tell you when you've actually got it.

Core Concept
The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential, awarded by the International Board of
Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE, established 1985), certifies that a clinician can provide skilled, evidence-based
care across the full spectrum of lactation — from preconception and pregnancy through weaning, and in normal, high-
risk, and complicated situations. It is the only globally recognized, NCCA-accredited lactation credential, held by more
than 39,000 practitioners in 137 countries. Candidates study this material because the IBCLC is positioned as an allied-
health clinician on the maternal–infant care team: the exam tests not isolated facts but clinical judgment — taking a history,
examining the dyad, building and documenting a care plan, and protecting breastfeeding within an ethical and legal
framework.

THE EXAM BLUEPRINT IN ONE BREATH
175 multiple-choice items in two parts (Part II is image-rich), each item mapped to one of 7 disciplines and one of 11
chronological periods, all oriented toward the tasks of building a care plan. Master the dyad across time, and you
master the test.

Key Concepts

1. Physiology & endocrinology of lactation
Definition: The hormonal and anatomical machinery of milk production — secretory differentiation in pregnancy
(Lactogenesis I), secretory activation after birth (Lactogenesis II, "milk coming in"), and the supply-and-demand
maintenance phase (galactopoiesis).
Why it matters: Almost every clinical problem — low supply, oversupply, delayed milk, engorgement — is a deviation
from normal physiology. You cannot fix what you cannot explain.
Key principle: Prolactin drives milk synthesis (volume); oxytocin drives milk ejection (let-down). After Lactogenesis II,
control shifts from endocrine (hormone-driven) to autocrine (local, demand-driven via the Feedback Inhibitor of
Lactation). Removed milk signals more milk.

2. Assessment of the breastfeeding dyad
Definition: Systematic evaluation of mother and infant together — maternal breast and nipple exam, infant oral anatomy
and tone, positioning, latch, and milk transfer (audible swallowing, pre/post-feed weights, output).
Why it matters: The IBCLC's signature skill is reading the dyad in real time and acting on it. The exam's image items
reward you for seeing what is actually happening at the breast.
Key principle: Assess the dyad, never one member in isolation. A "fussy baby" and a "low-supply mother" are often two
descriptions of the same transfer problem.
