Liberalism Liberalism is a political ideology whose central theme is a commitment to the
individual- and to the construction of the society in which individuals can satisfy
their interests or achieve fulfilment.
Core Values The core values of liberalism are individualism, rationalism, freedom, justice
and toleration.
Human Beings -Humans are individuals, endowed with reason
-Maximum possible freedom for all
-'Born equal,' equal moral. Formal equality and equal opportunities
-Rewarded according to their differing levels of talent or willingness to work
(Meritocracy)
Meritocracy -A liberal value
-Literally, rule by those with merit, merit being intelligence plus effort; a society
in which social position is determined exclusively by ability and hard work.
Society A liberal society is characterised by diversity and pluralism and is organised
politically around the twin values of consent and constitutionalism, combined to
form the structures of liberal democracy.
Pluralism -A liberal value
-Belief in diversity or choice, or the theory that political power is or should be
widely and evenly dispersed (see p. 330).
