Questions
1. Write a description next to each of the following terms to help you remember
them:

a. Transverse plane
A “Transverse plane” is a cross-section that divides the body into an upper and lower
body.
b. Sagittal plane
The “sagittal plane” moves relative to the coronal plane and divides the body into left
and right sides.
c. Midsagittal plane
The body is divided into equal halves according to the division of the ”Midsagittal plane”.
d. Coronal plane
The “Coronal plane” is the vertical plane that separates the front of the body and the
back half.
2. Identify the major organs that are contained in each cavity listed below.
Indicate whether they belong in a cavity subdivision, and if so, name the
cavity subdivision.

a. Dorsal cavity
The spinal cavity and the cerebral cavity are both housed in the dorsal cavity. The spinal
cord is housed in the spinal cavity as well as the brain is housed in the cranial cavity.
b. Ventral cavity
The thoratic and abdominopelvic cavities separate the ventral cavity. Heart, lungs,
trachea, oesophagus, main blood arteries, and nerves are all housed in the thoractic cavity. The
thoratic cavity is further divided into two sections: the Pleural cavity, which houses the lungs,
and the Pericaridal cavity, which houses the heart. The abdominal cavity, which houses the
majority of the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, and adrenal glands, and the pelvic cavity, which
houses the urinary bladder and reproductive organs, are separated by the abdominopelvic
cavity.

3. Match the body cavities that have to be opened during the listed surgical
procedures listed below. Note that more than one choice may apply.
