Week #1 ~ Why read to children?
“Literature should be seen as a vehicle for exploring the world rather than as a tool for teaching
reading”.

Social bonding
Reader-child relationship is a special bond where a child experiences feelings of warmth and
safety.
Adults + Reading = children’s understanding of value in activity. When adults are reading and
showing joy, children understand that reading is pleasurable.

Literature as mirror/window
Books allow for the children make sense of the world they live in. Books raise curiosity and
encourage questions and conversations. They can learn how to t into the world, and how to
relate to others. ~ Window
Books help to learn about themselves and see themselves in situations found in books.
Di culties with situations, can be helped with books by helping work through their problems,
gives hope that their problems can be resolved - either by themselves or with help from a
trusted adult. ~ Mirror

Rare Words
Reading can help develop children’s vocabulary in particular rare words. May not use them in
everyday conversation. These are fancy words, specialized words.
Stupendous = great.
Tantalizing = tempting.

The brain while reading
Learning to connect new, incoming information to what we know already. Learn by going over
that information in many di erent ways such as re-reading or drawing.

Higher levels of literacy and education = more money being made.

Books that are made of elements that come together to create a whole.
