Bij overgevoeligheid en astma is de acute reactie van het immuunsysteem hetzelfde. Bij astma is het echter zo dat dit probleem chronisch wordt, waardoor er bronchiale occlusie ontstaat.

Dit is een chronische ontsteking waarbij er auto-reactieve IgG componenten door het lichaam circuleren, deze zijn gericht tegen componenten van het cel oppervlak, het cytoplasma of de nucleus. Er treedt vaak veel schade op, over het hele lichaam. IgG bindt aan cellen, waardoor je daar weefseldestructie krijgt (overgevoeligheid type 2), hierdoor krijg je allerlei oplosbare componenten die vrijkomen en krijg je vorming van immuuncomplexen daarvan (overgevoeligheid type 3). Klinisch gezien krijg je schade aan het longweefsel, hartweefsel en nier weefsel, gewrichtsontstekingen, problemen met de vingertoppen en een uitslag in de vorm van een vlinder op het gezicht.

Het feit dat T-cellen alleen binden aan een bepaald HLA molecuul met daarin een peptide en niet aan een ander HLA molecuul met hetzelfde peptide. Dus echt alleen de unieke combinatie van het peptide met het HLA molecuul. Wanneer een van beiden anders is, dan bindt de T-cel niet.
