Introduction
Globalization and media have a lot of influence on how states and societies
operate that is totally different from activities of two to three decades ago. One of the
main concepts in the society introduced by media and globalization is the soft power.
Soft power has become an influential concept over the past decade that helps societies
gain an understanding of cultural dimensions in the international realm. The following
paper discusses Terry Flew's article ‘Entertainment media, cultural power, and post
globalization: The case of China’s international media expansion and the discourse of
soft power” to establish the author argument and key concept and relate it to

Robertson’s definition of globalization.
Summary of arguments and concepts in the article
Terry Flew discussed the concept of soft power in China in her article. Soft

power involves acquiring something by attracting people’s attention without any

coercion. The author made the following arguments in the article. Firstly, soft power
is an influential element used by states to help in understanding cultural dimensions in
international relations and helping a country promote their media and entertainment

industry (Flew, 2016). Secondly, Flew discovered China has successfully
implemented the element of soft power to influence the majority of her citizens and

people from other countries. China has one of the most admirable cultural practices in
the world making it possible to attract the attention of other states; hence, applying the
soft power to penetrate deep internationally in terms of trade (Nye, 2004). Finally, the
article argued the Chinese people have successfully implemented the element of soft
power to expand their international relations without investing much on military
