Hoorcollege Interculture - Reality and perception

Culture:

 Culture is a collective programming of the mind, to distinct 1 human group from the other.
 A system of shared values and beliefs that gives meaning.  Waarden en normen
 Is something that is not fixed, but changes with time.
 Nature; in the genes and nurture; by imitation!
 Pattern of shared values and emotions.  bijv. In het ene land proberen ze hun tranen in te houden op een
begrafenis, maar in Italië zijn ze heel expressief.
 That people are aware of - or not any more……
 In the deeper levels of the subconscious mind (onderbewustzijn)  je bent je er niet van bewust

Values and beliefs:

 Beliefs: are statements of facts, about the way things are.
 Values: are preferred states, about the way things should be.

Concept of coloring:

How you see reality or how you want to see reality through these cultural glasses coined by (bedacht door)
values, beliefs and how your world view is.

 Reality is how You see it or want to see it!
 (Intercultural) beliefs, values, world views

Defining filters of coloring:

 Character - (introverte mensen color the reality different than extraverte mensen)
 Religion - (iemand van de ene religie ziet de realiteit anders dan iemand van een andere religie)
 Social class - (if you come from a working family you see the reality different than a richer family) / (how you
look at the world being social or less social)
 Gender - (if you are a woman you see the reality differently then when you are a man > this is decided by
culture, how you should behave and interact as a woman or man)
 Sexual preference - (when you are gay you see the reality/society differently and how they threat you
differently then being a heterosexual woman/man)
 Education - (regarding to the school you have done you see reality differently)
 Profession - (if you are a nurse / when you are a ICT specialist) > (sometimes from different countries
understand each other better than a ICT specialist and nurse)
 Age - (between age generations are different cultures differences > less differences between the same
generation (18-19 years for example)
 Personal moods - (hungry, irritated  has an influence on how you filter reality)
 Geographic origin( = City or countryside) - (if you come from a city you have an other world/culture view
then someone from the countryside)

Perception of the world:

 Objective? NO  you have been brainwashed since we are born (subconsciously until 7 and after that
consciously) by your parents/school/etc.
 Maps  Mercator map 1569 coined the perfection of the world.
 Followed the historical/political, economical and social-cultural context at that time.
 Colonial times: Eurocentrism. Top-bottom perspective.
 Africa 14 times larger than Greenland
