Overview of Course Plan

Type 1 (T1D) diabetes is a chronic endocrine disease that is usually diagnosed in

childhood. The majority of children are diagnosed in their early teens. The treatment for and

complications of T1D have a life changing impact on not only the child, but the family as well.

The patients and their families will receive initial education of the actions of different insulins,

glucometer usage, and insulin injections. Further education will be needed to address the

pathophysiology of diabetes, types of insulins, concerns of diabetic highs and lows, diet,

exercise, and other areas of concern. Diabetic education has been shown to have an immense

improvement on patient well-being and to reduce hospitalizations and the cost of healthcare for

these individuals.

Children should be included in their care from an early age and gradually take on more

responsibilities in their own care as they enter young adulthood. This can be a challenging time

for someone who is already experiencing social and psychological changes. Teaching a class of

adolescents with T1D and their caregivers will require that the educator be well versed on the

subject, creates a suitable learning environment, describes learning outcomes, identifies barriers

of learning, utilizes appropriate teaching strategies, is trained to help problem solve, and uses

both psychological and behavioral strategies that are appropriate and motivational for a diverse

group of people.

The name of the course to be taught is Diabetic Education for Adolescents with Type 1

Diabetes and Their Caregivers. The class is an eight-week class that will meet for two hours

every Thursday evening. The class is designed to commission young people and their families to

have control over their illness. Instruction will be provided by a diabetic educator and a dietician.

Topics to be discussed are the pathophysiology of diabetes and its complications, types of
