A Comparison of eHealth and telemedicine
Introduction
Telemedicine and eHealth are two crucial terms used in healthcare technology to describe
the use of technology in enhancing healthcare plans and processes. The two terms describe how
healthcare professionals leverage technology to deliver care and improve patient access to quality
care. While these two terms are commonly used in healthcare technology, they differ in definition,
usage process, purpose, and how they are applied. Healthcare technology is an emerging concept,
making telemedicine and eHealth relatively new concepts that require attention, especially after
the COVID pandemic, where these two systems were applied to reduce the spread of the disease
and manage its effects.
Purpose
Telemedicine is a technology system that employs information communication
technologies to gather and deliver patient information to healthcare personnel. The system allows
the exchange of information between patients and healthcare providers. According to Wernhart et
al. (2019), telemedicine should ensure secure text transmission and clear audio and image
transmissions for effective treatment and prevention. Telemedicine employs real-time information
exchange through remote monitoring and online consultation (Haleem et al., 2021). The system
improves access to healthcare for populations limited by location or health condition. This system
has caused significant improvements in healthcare access, a reduction in the spread of diseases,
and the management of overcrowding in hospitals as it provides remote services.
On the other hand, eHealth utilizes information communication technologies to boost
health services and support health fields. eHealth uses technologies such as electronic health
records, online health applications such as blood pressure monitoring, and online consultations
