ANATOMY
PHYSIOLOGY
, Function of blood
Transports oxygen from the lungs, needed for cellular metabolism, transports
carbon dioxide waste to the lungs. Blood carries nutrients, ions, water, from
digestive tract to body's cells. Transports body's cells waste product to the sweat
glands and kidneys for excretion. Transports hormones for endocrine glands to
target organs. Transports enzymes to regulate chemical reactions. Regulates body
pH through carrying buffers and amino acids. Regulates body temperature.
Regulates water content in cells, protects body against foreign microorganisms.
Contains mechanisms that have clotting mechanisms and prevent fluid loss.
Erythrocytes:
Red blood cells, 95% of the volumes of blood cells.
Leukocytes:
White blood cells, granular and agranular leukocytes.
Granular leukocytes:
Neutrophils 60-70% of WBC's. Eosinophils 2-4%. Basophils 0.5-1%.
Agranular leukocytes:
Monocytes 3-8%. Lymphocytes 20-25%.
Plasma:
The fluid component of blood, 91% is water. 7% are proteins, albumin, globulins,
and fibrinogen. Plasma solutes 2% consist of ions, nutrients, waste product, gases,
enzymes and hormones.
