Introduction
The social work profession is a diverse field that significantly impacts various spheres of
Canadian society. The profession works with vulnerable individuals, including those with
substance use disorders, children and individuals from the Indigenous community. The latter is of
tremendous focus in this essay as we try to uncover the lasting impact of this community's century-
long oppression and colonization. Social work organizations have been in place for centuries.
While it made a negative impact on the Indigenous society by perpetrating the injustices that left
a significant impact on their lives, the role of these institutions remains inconsequential as some
continue to uphold oppressive and discriminative practices that propagate the injustices. While this
is true, organizations are moving towards implementing justice and reconciliation practices,
eliminating organizational barriers to these elements. These organizations strive to connect good
intentions with rationale and outcomes to identify the adverse outcomes and the impact on the
community.
This paper offers an actionable transformative approach for the Family and Children's
Services of Guelph and Wellington County to adopt a practical approach towards addressing the
issues facing the Indigenous communities within Canadian society. The suggested approaches are
founded on the concepts of knowing, being, seeing and doing as they relate to the indigenous
people and focus on promoting a shift towards decolonizing, anti-oppressive, trauma-informed and
anti-racist practices in the organization. As an individual of a minority group living in Canada, I
have lived experiences of discrimination and oppression. Although they may not equate to the
severe injustices the indigenous populations have lived for centuries, they inform my practice as a
