NR447 Week 3: Conflict and Collaboration At times the needs of our families conflict with our work responsibilities. Could this possibly be the underlying issue here? 1. Explain the conflict resolution skills displayed by the leader in the scenario. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate those of the leader. 2. How might earlier collaboration have been beneficial? 3. Some organizations utilize non Registered Nurses in the Case Manager role. What additional skills, knowledge and attributes would the BSN-prepared Registered Nurse bring to case management in this scenario? Professor and Class, As the nurse in the video was aware/ able to recognize that a conflict existed, I believe she was in the stage of perceived conflict. (Finkelman, 2016.) The nurse is very afraid to go into a certain neighborhood where her patient is due to the high crime rate. The leader in the scenario did well to actively listen and hear the employees concern. Conflict resolution skills used by the leader were: First the environment in which the conversation took place was a nice calm environment, it was not too emotional. (Finkelman, 2016.) The leader also chose to fully actively listen and allowed the nurse the time needed to express concerns. By doing so the leader was able to show a respect for the nurse and this builds trust. The nurse manager was able to convey exactly why that specific nurse was assigned that patient load and offered resolution that could be acceptable to all parties involved. (Finkelman, 2016) I would give the nurse manager a 9/10. A couple of areas to improve would have been to reach out to the nurse before the patient load was assigned, and to also maybe allow the nurse to have a trial of the security detail to see if that made her feel anymore safe. Everything was talked about in a professional manner and both parties showed respect for one another by listening and not interrupting or booming emotional when the other was stating their thoughts. By collaborating earlier the manger could have negotiated head on or assigned a different diabetic specialty nurse that did not have the same fears. This could have prevented the whole situation. "Nurses are well suited to the role because the functions of case management closely follow the framework of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Case management as a process broadens this framework and incorporates additional components, such as patient identification or case selection; resource identification; advocacy; coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of care; data collection and analysis; and documentation of multiple outcomes, including cost, quality, and client status." (White, 2006) Case management requires collaboration and coordination of care. The case manager needs to be able to include patient, family (when needed) and the healthcare team in order to help decide what the best discharge planning may be for the patient or what they qualify for with their insurance. Learning about healthcare policy, finances, and and regulatory environments that we learn more about in our BSN journey would definitely help. White, P., & Hall, M. E. (2006, April). Mapping the literature of case management nursing. Retrieved July 23, 2018, from Finkelman, A. (2016). Leadership and management for nurses: Core competencies for quality care (3rd ed.). Boston, MA: Pearson.
