This document is an Image to Cope Assignment, a form of art-based psychological assessment designed to explore the stress reactions and coping mechanisms of an eight-year-old boy dealing with psychological distress following his parents' separation and divorce. The assignment is analyzed in three stages: Stage 1 & 2: Drawing and Interpretation of Stressful Situation The first drawing visually captures the boy's feelings of being forgotten, isolated, and unloved following his parents' divorce, his father's physical distance, and his mother's emotional unavailability due to a new partner. Subjective Experience: The boy feels everyone is near him, but no one is with him, compounded by school bullying he is reluctant to share. Image Analysis (Compositional Explanation): The Boy's Figure: He is seated in a fetal position with his knees hugged inward, symbolizing withdrawal and an inability to face overwhelming emotions. He is centrally placed but physically isolated by sharp lines from his surroundings, indicating his sense of exclusion and emotional stagnation. Parental Figures: His absent father is depicted as a blurred, dark, and unrecognizable figure emerging from the horizon, representing pain, sadness, and fragmented identity. His mother is drawn as a present but unavailable full figure with her new partner. Spatial Dynamics: The isolation and positioning signify an internal experience of emotional and physical abandonment and a disjointed view of his family. Stage 3: Envisaging Solutions The second drawing represents the boy's vision for overcoming his emotional distress. Image Interpretation: The boy is now centrally focused and located amongst loved ones, with comforting details like flowers and a dog. Symbolism of Change: His father, previously a dark, distant figure, is now near him and has an extending hand, symbolizing the potential to rebuild emotional connection, openness, and communication. Surrounding himself with pets and comforting elements shows a shift in coping mechanisms, creating a safe space for emotional expression

Image to Cope Assignment

Stage 1: Drawing of a Stressful Situation

Interpretation of the Image

My parents divorced a year ago, and since then, I have been feeling forgotten. It is like

everyone is near me, but no one is around me or with me. My father lives three hours away because

we moved to a new place. He is always at a distance and not here when I need him. My mother

found a new partner, and things have been going great. She looks happy when he is around, and I

don't want to make her sad by telling her about the bullying in school. This makes me feel isolated

and unloved, so I have been unhappy.

Stage 2: Compositional Explanation of the Image

This image captures the psychological dynamics- stress reaction of an eight-year-old boy

dealing with psychological distress following the separation and divorce of his parents.

Image Focus and Shape

The boy’s image is centrally and significantly placed, signifying the central role he

considers himself to play in the process. The boy finds himself the most affected by the divorce.
