D661 Creating Positive Learning Environments
A. At the beginning of the mursion, I welcomed the kids and asked them
how they felt about the book. Once I let everyone speak on how they liked
the book or didn’t like it, I reminded them of the rules for the class, such as
being respectful and making sure they would let everyone speak their mind.
Once we finished discussing the rules and expectations of the group, I let
them discuss amongst themselves. There were a few times when the
students went off track from what they were supposed to be discussing, but
they were able to get back on track. I did have to intervene during a minor
discussion between two of the students, but I just reminded them that the
characters, just like them, all differed and have different opinions, and that
was okay, just to get the kids back on the discussion.
B. I do believe that the strategies I used were effective in keeping the
students on task and getting them back on track. I used the SOAR method,
and that helped me to know when I needed to step in and help with a
disagreement between two of the kids that they weren’t going to resolve on
their own. I also used what they were disagreeing about to tie into the
lesson by reminding them how the characters reminded them of themselves,
and that we are all different, just like the Little Women characters. This got
the students back to talking about the book.
One part I struggled with at the beginning was not building a personal
relationship with the students. I needed to ask them some questions just so
I could learn more about them and foster that positive learning
environment.
C. To develop a positive and engaging environment for group discussions,
it is very important to establish norms, routines, and what is expected to
support learning. I would plan to establish the following:
1. Norm:
A. Respect: Everyone will listen to others and not interrupt when
someone else is talking.
B. Cooperate: Everyone should actively take part and provide
responses.
2. Routines:
