List and describe the four different types of facility layouts. Provide an
example for each type.

• Process layouts – group similar resources together based on
similar processes/functions – like the school grades that are all
, grouped together, all 1st grade near each other, 2nd grade and so
on
• Product layout – designed to produce a specific product efficiently
– like groceries in the store – how they are placed on the shelves
and grouped together
• Hybrid layouts – combined aspects of both process and product
layout - like a Winnebago which makes campers. The vehicle is
produced on a assembly line whereas the curtains and
bedspreads are made in a fabrication shop [that use a process
layout.
• Fixed position layouts – product is too large to move and all
resources must be brought to production site like a bridge,
construction, airplane, shipbuilding
