Integrating Non-Western Principles and Methods into Social Work
Introduction: Case
The identified client, Ally (Pseudonym), is a fifteen-year-old African American girl born
and raised in the US. She presents with various issues, including anxiety and school avoidance. I
had sessions with Ally alone and other sessions with her mother. Ally is feeling pressured and
invalidated because of her anxiety, primarily because her mother disregards her feelings about it.
Her mother, on the other hand, is struggling to understand why her daughter cannot simply push
back her feelings of anxiety for the sake of learning. I provided the mother with psychoeducational
materials on anxiety and avoidance behaviours. Informed consent was obtained from the client,
and confidentiality clauses were used to ensure no identifying data was used. The client was
assured that the information would be used solely for academic purposes, which would be shared
with the instructor and discussed in class. I also assured her that she would not be negatively
affected in any way if she did not participate in the study. This report highlights the use of non-
Western principles and methods in addressing psychological issues in social work.
NTU Psychotherapy
One of the most significant approaches applied in the case is NTU psychotherapy. This
spiritually-based afro-centric approach to counselling emphasizes integrating cultural aspects to
attain authenticity and balance. Principles guiding the use of NTU psychotherapy include cultural
awareness, interconnectedness, harmony and authenticity (Keçeci & Ekşi, 2019; Sim et al., 2022).
The processes applied include harmony, which primarily entails trying to live within the moment
and context instead of fighting life, being in charge of an individual's life, and steering in the
wanted direction. In this case, for example, this step entailed guiding Ally to accept being in charge
of her emotions and identify elements that could be triggering anxiety.
