A. Summary of the Simulation and Strategies Used

During the simulation, I facilitated a small group discussion in a
7th-grade classroom centered on analyzing the characters in
Little Women. Early on, Ava made a sharp remark toward Ethan,
prompting me to intervene by asking her to apologize. While my
intent was to uphold respect, my approach inadvertently made
Ava feel singled out, which led to her disengagement for the
remainder of the session.
To manage this and other conflicts, I used strategies aligned with
the SOAR model:
• Stop: I paused the conversation when Ava’s comment
crossed a line.
• Observe: I listened to how students responded
emotionally and socially after that moment.
• Assess: I noticed Ava becoming shut down and Savannah’s
hesitance to speak up, which signaled the need for a safer
environment.
• React: I tried to re-engage Ava with targeted, low-stakes
questions and encouraged others to contribute through
connections with the characters.
Additionally, I maintained a positive and constructive tone,
especially during moments of conflict, which helped create a
more supportive atmosphere for the rest of the group. I invited
students to share personal connections to characters, posed open-
ended questions (e.g., “Which character reminds you of someone
you know?”), and encouraged multiple perspectives.
