This unit introduces the essential principles of pharmacology, particularly relevant for nursing and healthcare students preparing for Exam One. The focus is on understanding how drugs work, how they move through the body, and how they are classified. Key concepts include: Pharmacokinetics: The study of drug movement through the body, including absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME). Pharmacodynamics: How drugs affect the body, including mechanism of action, therapeutic effects, and side effects. Drug Classifications: Grouping medications based on their effects, chemical structure, or therapeutic use. Routes of Administration: Oral, intravenous (IV), subcutaneous (SubQ), inhalation, and topical. Factors Affecting Drug Action: Age, weight, genetics, liver/kidney function, and interactions with other drugs. Terminology: Definitions of terms like bioavailability, half-life, agonist, antagonist, and therapeutic index. This foundational knowledge is critical for safe medication administration and understanding patient responses to treatment.

Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics
Week one notes

Pharmacodynamics- what the drug does to the body

What effect does the drug have on the person you are giving it to

Pharmacokinetics- Pharmaco (drug) kinetics (movement)

- What does the body do to the drug

Pharmacokinetics has 4 phase

AD-ME – Absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion
A-Absorption

Drug moves from site of absorption (small intestine) into the
bloodstream

Bioavailability – how much of the drug reaches the blood
stream

Factors affecting absorption

1.Circulation

- Poor blood flow to the GI tract and you taking oral med will lead
to a decrease in the rate of absorption

- Happens in pt. in shock or vasoconstricting drugs

2. Pain, stress, exercise
