Epithelial Tissue
Guide to Key Points and Features
For your Study material you should list the SPECIFIC Tissue type, the location in the body, the
function at the pictured location and any notable structures .
*ET=Epithelial tissue
*CT=Connective tissue
Pictures 1-4.
1 and 2
you can see two different tissue types at this location. Simple Squamous ET and simple
cuboidal ET. The function of the simple squamous is rapid filtration. The single layer of
flat cells allows for easy movement of material at the glomerulus/renal corpuscle.
(notable structure). These are the circular areas that are visible. The kidney tubules are
simple cuboidal and the function is selective reabsorption. The kidney tubules create a
lumen for passage of material. If water or other material needs to be retained in the body
the kidney tubules will selectively allow this material to be reabsorbed into the body.
The kidney tubules have tight junctions.
3-Glomerulus (simple squamous ET)
4- kidney tubules (simple cuboidal ET)
Organ: Kidney
o Cell Types:
Simple squamous epithelium – filtration
Simple cuboidal epithelium - absorption
o Features:
Renal corpuscles
Bowman’s capsule
Simple squamous epithelium
Filtration
Glomerulus
Simple squamous epithelium
Diffusion
Renal tubules
Simple cuboidal epithelium
Absorption/reabsorption
o Function: diffusion, filtration and reabsorption
o Body System: Urinary system
Pictures 5-6
This is a picture of the lung and the tissue type is simple squamous. This is a single layer of flat
cells that allow easy movement of gas from the alveoli into the blood stream and from the blood
stream into the Alveoli.
Organ: Lung
o Cell Types:
Simple squamous epithelium – gas exchange
o Features:
Alveoli – functional units of lungs
