Introduction to Biology Discussion Forum Unit 5 Topic: DNA Replication and the Possible Consequences of Errors in Replication DNA replication is the process by which the DNA of the genome is copied in cells. Before a cell can divide, it must first copy (or duplicate) its entire genome so that each daughter cell ends up with its own complete genome. Each cell contains all the DNA it needs to make other cells. During cell division, all the information in the cell must be copied perfectly. DNA is therefore a molecule that can be copied to make nearly perfect copies of itself. It takes several hours of pure copying time to replicate all the DNA in a single human cell. At the end of this process, once the DNA is fully replicated, the cell effectively contains twice the amount of DNA it needs. The cell can then divide this DNA and divide it into the daughter cell, so that the daughter cell and the parent cell are, in many cases, completely genetically identical.

Introduction to Biology Discussion Forum Unit Five

Topic: DNA Replication and the Possible Consequences of Errors
in Replication

DNA replication is the process by which the DNA of the genome is
copied in cells. Before a cell can divide, it must first copy (or
duplicate) its entire genome so that each daughter cell ends up
with its own complete genome. Each cell contains all the DNA it
needs to make other cells. During cell division, all the information
in the cell must be perfectly copied. DNA is therefore a molecule
that can be copied to make nearly perfect copies of itself.
Replicating all the DNA in a single human cell takes several hours
of pure replication time. At the end of this process, once the DNA is
fully replicated, the cell effectively contains twice the amount of
DNA it needs. The cell can then divide this DNA and divide it into
the daughter cell, so that the daughter cell and the parent cell are,
.in many cases, completely genetically identical
