a) European Commission

The function of the European Commission:

The european commission is both the bureaucratic arm of the EU which responsible for drawing up
proposing laws and policies and its executive arm which is responsible for overseeing their
implementation through member states. and the Council of the EU.

The political roles of the European Commission are:

 Initiation (right of initiative)
 Implementation (of legislation and policies)
 EU Budget
 External relations

b) the European Parliament

The function of the European Parliament:

The european parliament is the only directly elected European institution. It is the legislative arm of
the EU. They share their responsibility with the council of ministers for debating, amending and
taking votes on proposals for new laws and the EU budget.

The political roles of the European Parliament are:

 Legislative function
 Power over the budget
 Power over the institutions – parliamentary scrutiny

c) the Council of the European Union

The function of the council of the European Union:

The council of the European Unionion negotiates and adopts legislatives acts together with the
European parliament. They do this through legislative procedures.

The political roles of the council of the European Union are:

 Discussions  Adopting laws
 Amending  Coordination
