Things to consider to access the higher band
AC1.1 Provide a clear and detailed evaluation (strengths and limitations) of the following
(10 MARKS) personnel:
● Crime scene investigators
● Forensic specialists
● Forensic scientists
● Police officers
● Crown prosecution service
● Pathologist
Evaluation should consider cost, expertise and availability. You can not access full
marks if you just describe the role of these personnel. You must be evaluative in your
response. Remember to include case studies where appropriate.
AC1.2 Assess the usefulness of all investigative techniques listed below:
(20 MARKS) ● Forensic
● Surveillance
● Profiling techniques
● Use of intelligent data (DNA)
● Interview techniques (eyewitness testimony)
Consider how useful they are in a range of situations e.g. on the crime scene, in the
laboratory etc. and how useful they are for different types of crimes e.g. violent
crimes, e-crimes etc.
AC1.3 Provide a clear and detailed explanation of how physical and testimonial evidence is
(6 MARKS) processed with relevant examples and theories (for example, Locard’s exchange
theory). For both types of evidence, you must include collection > transfer > storage >
analysis > personnel involved.
AC1.4 Examine the rights of the suspect, victim and witness in a criminal investigation. To
(6 MARKS) access full marks, you must consider all of these individuals. Consider their rights
from the investigation through to appeal. Remember to include the relevant
legislation.
AC2.1 You should have an understanding of the role of the CPS. Explain the evidential and
(4 MARKS) public interest test in the decision to prosecute. For full marks, your explanation
must be detailed. Use at least one case study. It is only worth 4 marks so no need to
use more!
AC2.2 Describe each stage of the trial process including the role of the personnel involved.

● Bail
● Plea bargaining
● Courts
● Appeals
