Abstract
Recent theories emphasize that effective leadership is affected by the personality of the
leader, the general conditions in the workplace and the quality characteristics of employees.
“More specifically, Skinner and Spurgeon (Skinner & Spurgeon, 2005) note that health
leadership involves understanding and communicating with a wide variety of individuals in a
number of different situations and not just focusing on work results and rational processes.”
Social and emotional intelligence skills (SEI) should be used by all managers and leaders. The
SEIs include self-management, self-awareness, executive function, social awareness, and
interpersonal communication.
The first SEI skill is self-management. The meaning of self- management is being able to
be accountable for your actions and responsible. The ability to stay organized, achieving goals is
a great example of this skill. Being able to manage yourself as well as the actions of others is
also important. Demonstrating this behavior is not always easy. You own up to your own
mistakes and do not pass blame on others. In addition, being able to remain calm during stressful
events and situations is another excellent example of this self-management skill. A way of
controlling your actions and behaviors is taking on a task and then sticking to the deadline. In
keeping in mind self-management skills, as a Nurse you have to be able to respond to situations
with control and demeanor at all times. This would be even more as evident in a leadership
position as you are leading by example.
Self-awareness is the ability to aware of one’s own self. We start out in life as an infant
not knowing who we are or what is planned for our future. As we grow up, we learn differences
in ourselves, others, and our surroundings. We also learn our own strengths and weaknesses how
