2. First ensure safety by - Check the scene/ area
- Assess the injured or il individual
- Activate EMS by calling 911
- Perform CPR
- Defibrillate
3. Steps for CPR - Check for carotid pulse(side of neck) for no more than 10
seconds.
- Not sure of pulse, begin CPR of 30 compressions & 2 breaths
- Use heel of one hand on the lower half of the sternum in the
middle of the chest. Put your other hand on top of the first hand.
- Straighten your arms and press straight down 2 inches but no
more than 2.4 inches at a rate of 100 to 120 per min(2 per sec.)
- Between each compression, completely stop pressing and allow
chest to return to its natural position. Do not lean/rest on chest
between compressions as it can keep the heart from refilling with
blood.
- Stop after 30 compressions. Open airway by using the
head-tilt/chin-lift maneuver(put your hand on their forehead and
tilt the head back, use index and middle finger on the lower jaw
to lift up jaw)
- Don't do the head-tilt/chin-tilt lift if individual may have neck
injury so use jaw-thurst maneuver(grasp the angles of the lower
jaw and lift it with both hands, one on each side, moving the jw
forward. If their lips are closed, open the lower lip using your
thumb.
- Give a breath while watching their chest rise up. Repeat while
giving the second breath(one breath per second)
- Resume compressions while switching quickly from compres-
sions to breaths to minimize interruptions

4. Adult CPR Chain of Survival I) Scene Safety: Make sure the scene is safe, look around your
surrounding
II) Alertness: Is the victim alert? Shout, " Hey ________ are you
okay"
III) Call 9-1-1: OR get help from someone
IV) Check for pulse & breathing: You must check for pulse & breath-
ing simultaneously and don not take more than 10 seconds
V) Begin CPR
- CPR: 30 compression to 2 breaths
- Rate: 100-120 compression/min
- Deep: 2 inches/5 cm
5 cycles (2 minutes) before re-assessing or switching rescuers
VI) AED: If available use AED
- Turn it on
- Follow the prompts
VII) Recovery
- AHA understands that this process can take a long period of
time
VIII) Stop CPR only
- If the scene is no longer safe
- Paramedics, medical personal, or someone else comes to help
= If patient wakes up, stay with them until medical personal
provides assistance
- If you are too tired to continue

5. Things to remember - Don't move the person if they could have a spinal injury and call
911. Moving makes injury worse
- Call victim by their name while asking if okay as it gets their
attention.
- Tap shoulders firmly to help identify nature of emergency
- Signal someone to call 911
- Check for pulse for 5-10 seconds
- Count chest compressions out loud to help you focus, other
person helping with breaths will know when to give breaths, so
rescuers known when to switch
- protect yourself during breaths with pocket mask, bag valve mask
or only do compressions if you don't have protection
- pocket mask can be used with 1,2,3 rescuers
- Bag valve mask can be used with 2 or more rescuers because
takes too much time on their own
- If patient is pregnant follow Adult BLS CPR Chain of Survivor
6. Two-Rescuer BLS/CPR Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ac4R126FVrA&t=3s
7. Adult BLS ensure safety - Check the scene/ area
- Assess the injured or il individual
- Activate EMS by calling 911
- Perform CPR
- Defibrillate
8. Steps for Two-Rescuer - One-Rescuer BLS=Two-Rescuer BLS
CPR(Adults) - Have second rescuer retrieve the AED
- First rescuer deliver chest compressions counting out loud
- Second rescuer applies the AED pads
- Second rescuer opens the person's airway and gives rescue
