3. If you are alone with a - Tap and talk loudly to the child to see if they respond
child at the scene, do - If the child doesn't respond or if they aren't breathing or only gasping,
the following: yell for help
- If someone answers, send them to call 911/EMS and get an AED
- Assess for breathing and check for the child's carotid pulse or femoral
pulse for 5 seconds but not more than 10 seconds
- If you cannot feel a pulse(or unsure), begin CPR 30:2 rate
If you feel a pulse but it's less than 60 beats per minute do CPR since that
rate is low
- After doing CPR for about 2 minutes(5 cycles), and if help has arrived, call
EMS while staying with the child.
- Get an AED if you know where it is
- Use and follow AED prompts when available and continuing CPR until
EMS arrives or when child's condition normalizes.
4. There is WITNESS and Un-witness means that you do have no idea how long the child has been
UN-WITNESS Child CPR unconscious. You did not see when he/she collapse, for how long they
protocols, have been unconscious, etc.
Witness means that you saw the child collapse, you know when exactly this
happen.
5. Special Considerations If you are by yourself & you have no cell phone on you, you will follow
the un-witness protocol, whether or not you witness the child become
unconscious.
If you have a cell phone &/ or someone else is with you, you follow the
witness protocol, regardless if you witness it or not when the child collapse.
