Abdominal cavity - ANS -

Abdominopelvic cavity - ANS -

Anatomical position - ANS - Universally accepted standard starting point for
describing the body

Anatomy - ANS - the study of the form and structure of an organism

Anterior/Ventral - ANS - front side of the body

Cardiac muscle - ANS - causes the heart to beat

Caudal - ANS - body parts located near the sacral region of the spinal cavity (also
known as the "tail")

Cell - ANS - Basic structure of all living things

Cell membrane - ANS - the outer protective covering of the cell. (plasma membrane or
plasmalemma)

Cellular Respiration - ANS - the process by which organisms use oxygen to break
down food molecules to get chemical energy for cell functions

Centrosome - ANS - located in the cytoplasm and near the nucleus. It contains two
centrioles. During mitosis, or cell division, the centrioles separate. This creates an even
division of the chromosomes in the two new cells.

Chromatin - ANS - located in the nucleus and made of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
and protein

Congenital - ANS - acquired during development of the infant in the uterus and
existing at or dating from birth

, Connective Tissue - ANS - Supports organs and other body parts

Cranial - ANS - body parts located near the head

Cytoplasm - ANS - semifluid substance inside the cell but outside the nucleus. Site for
chemical reactions in the cell such as protein synthesis and cellular respiration

Deep - ANS - through the surface, as in a deep cut

Degenerative - ANS - caused by a deterioration of the function or structure of body
tissues and organs either by normal body aging or lifestyle choices such as diet and
exercise

Diaphragm - ANS - Divides the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity

Distal - ANS - body parts distant from the point of reference

Dorsal cavity - ANS -

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) - ANS - a fine network of tubular structures located in the
cytoplasm. Allows for transport of materials into and out of the nucleus, and also aids in
synthesis and storage of proteins.

Epigastric region - ANS -

Epithelial tissue - ANS - Covers the body; main tissue of skin

Frontal or Coronal plane - ANS - divides the body into anterior and posterior sections

Golgi apparatus - ANS - a stack of membrane layers located in the cytoplasm. This
structure produces, stores, and packages secretions for discharge from the cell. Cells of
the salivary, gastric, and pancreatic glands have large numbers of Golgi apparatus.

Homeostasis - ANS - the ability of an organism to maintain stability in spite of
changes.

Hypogastric region - ANS -
