Concept Map Summary: Describe the elements on the Concept Map and include the following.
a. Provide a succinct description of the vulnerable population identified.
Low-income, non-white communities in Texas represent a particularly vulnerable population
affected by natural disasters. Collins et al. (2019) found that households belonging to Hispanic,
Black, and other racial or ethnic minority groups suffered from more severe flooding compared
to white households. These communities frequently reside in areas prone to flooding and have
historically been impacted by discriminatory housing policies. Their socioeconomic
disadvantage exacerbates their vulnerability during such events.
b. Discuss a minimum of three variables that place the population at risk
Populations at risk are often influenced by various interconnected factors, such
as
socioeconomic status, historical discrimination, and lack of infrastructure which can significantly
impact their well-being. Socioeconomic status plays a crucial role, as limited financial resources
and higher poverty rates restrict access to essential services and opportunities. Households
categorized as having lower socioeconomic status (SES) were significantly more affected by
extensive flooding when compared to those classified as having higher SES (Collins et al.,
