DUE 19 JUNE 2026

QUESTION 1

1.1 Describe your understanding of "lesson planning".

Lesson planning is the systematic process a teacher undertakes before delivering a
lesson to design and organise a structured learning experience for students. It is a
detailed outline that specifies what learners need to learn, how the lesson will be taught,
and how learning will be assessed. According to the TMN3705 Study Guide, lesson
planning refers to "all the decisions related to teaching and learning prior to
implementing a lesson, which comprises a teacher's interactions with the content,
including what to teach, how to structure the content, and how well the content fits in a
particular context" (TMN3705 Study Guide 2021:56). The Study Guide further
emphasises that lesson planning is a critical part of managing the curriculum and that
the planning process should be an ongoing cycle (TMN3705 Study Guide 2021:56). A
lesson plan serves as the teacher's road map, outlining teaching methods, learning
activities, resources, and assessment strategies that will be employed during a lesson.
It is important because it helps teachers organise their teaching, implement appropriate
strategies, avoid mistakes, and present lessons with greater confidence. As the Study
Guide notes, "the Department of Education stresses that the planning process should
be an ongoing cycle and that planning is a critical part of managing the curriculum and
an extremely important task for an NSTech teacher" (TMN3705 Study Guide 2021:56).

, 1.2 Differentiate between a lesson outcome and a lesson objective. Give an
example of each. (6)

A lesson outcome describes the overall purpose or goal of a learning activity, focusing
on what learners should know or be able to do upon completing the lesson. It provides
evidence of the learner's progress and describes the knowledge, skills, or expertise a
learner will gain. Outcomes are written from the learner's perspective and describe
the result of the learning experience. The TMN3705 Study Guide indicates that
outcomes "describe what learners should know or be able to do upon completing the
lesson" (TMN3705 Study Guide 2021:68).

A lesson objective, on the other hand, outlines the specific learning goals or skills that
students will acquire during the lesson. It organises specific topics or individual learning
activities to achieve the overall learning outcome. Objectives describe what the teacher
intends to teach and what the teacher will do throughout the lesson. The Study Guide
explains that objectives "describe the specific goals or skills that students will acquire
during the lesson" (TMN3705 Study Guide 2021:68). They are statements that define
the intended achievements and are used to structure the content of an educational
activity.
