Abstract or concrete qualities, properties, or characteristics of
people, things, or situations are described as variables. Variables are
manipulated and/or measured in quantitative research (Grove & Gray,
2021.) Variables are defined in two way - conceptually and operationally. A
conceptual definition is a broad, abstract definition of a concept. This
definition can be found in relevant literature about topics of interest. For
example, pressure injuries are defined as "localized damage to the skin and
underlying soft tissue usually over a bony prominence or related to a
medical or other device." (Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Society,
2016). As defined here, there is no way to determine change or outcomes in
conceptual definitions. So, we operationalize the variables. Instruments and
tools are developed to make the concepts measurable by assigning numbers
for data analysis. Examples of pressure injuries operational definitions could
be using wound assessment tools, the Braden Scale, or the NPUAP Staging
tool.
Variables are classified in several ways and all studies use several
types of variables. Read in your text about variables to complete this
assignment, using the words below. Answers are only one word. Misspelled
words are counted wrong.
