TITLE SLIDE (NO PRESENTER NOTES ON THIS SLIDE)

STANDARDIZED TERMINOLOGIES

Standardized terminologies such as ICD-10, HCPCS, and CPT to name a few, are

designed for a uniform way of communication. They are standardized, which means it is the

same from facility to facility. Standardized terminologies are also important within the

healthcare facility as they allow for consistent communication with nurses, physicians,

researchers, and even administration. This allows for interoperability, which is important in

healthcare so that patient information can cross different systems seamlessly. It is also important

for the healthcare facility in terms of reimbursement.

ICD-10 – International Classification of Diseases – Facilitates the storage and retrieval of

diagnostic information and serves as the basis for compiling mortality and morbidity statistics

reported by WHO members (Oachs & Watters, 2020). The positive impact on data quality that

ICD-10 has had is amazing. It is international meaning there are many other countries that utilize

the same code. This is important for tracking diseases and deaths. This makes for a great tool to

track pandemics and epidemics because you are seeing information from other countries and are

able to relate it to what is happening in your current area.

Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) – Used primarily for reimbursement

purposes in the outpatient or ambulatory setting. A two-part system, one part called Level I,

contains CPT codes as published by the American Medical Association (AMA). The other part,

Level II is basically everything else that does is not included in CPT (Oachs & Watters, 2020).
